BBC Sussex and Surrey presenter Amanny Mo spoke with Melody Woodham, Tim Laverack and Clive Whitburn of the Composers Network about their upcoming charity concert at the Birley Centre in Eastbourne.
The Composers Network’s primary objective is to promote the work of living composers whilst building a network of like-minded people who can facilitate this. To that end the Network is always looking to establish new links with composers and artists on a local, national, and international level. Their first concert, Without Borders, aims to highlight the human coast of one of the biggest challenges of our time, the migrant crises. All profits from the Without Borders concert will go to the charity Migrant Help to aid their work supporting the most vulnerable refugees and migrants. "We hope this is the first of many such concerts and extend a warm invitation to anyone who wishes to join the collective".
The Modulus String Quartet joins forces with the New Network Singers to perform an array of contemporary classical music by living composers Tim Laverack, Clive Whitburn, Melody Woodham, Jessica Curry (BAFTA winner and Classic FM presenter), Veera Lummi, Terry Davies, Eliot Lloyd Short and Ash Madni. Several of the pieces will be world premieres.
The concept behind ‘Without Borders’ is to focus on the human cost of the migrant crisis while doing something practical to help. It is hoped that by keeping the migrant crisis at the forefront of public consciousness it will remain high on the political agenda. As Dina Nayeri so eloquently puts it: ‘It is the obligation of every person in a safer room to open the door when someone in danger knocks.’
